A 7-week course for students ready to level up their wheel practice.

This advanced course is designed for students who have completed an intermediate course at Tomo, or have experience confidently throwing up to 1.2kg of clay on the wheel. You’ll learn how to throw on the hump, a North Asian technique for efficiently creating various tableware forms like cups, bowls, and dishes. Then, you’ll move on to fitted lids, focusing on small jars that require precision in both form and fit.

The first half of the course is dedicated to hump-throwing and trimming various smaller forms. In the second half, you’ll create lidded jars with tight-fitting, functional lids. The final session covers glazing and finishing your selected pieces using Studio Tomo’s in-house glazes.

Ideal for potters who want to improve consistency, control, and take on a rewarding technical challenge. Class size is capped at 7 pax to ensure close guidance.

Duration
One class per week, 2.5 hours each

What you’ll bring home
Up to 8 finished pieces
(Extra pieces and firings can be added for a small fee)

Instructor: Jeanette Adrienne Wee
Jean Adrienne is a Singapore-based ceramic artist and educator whose work moves fluidly between form and feeling, exploring vessels and sculptural pieces shaped by themes of balance and chaos. A longtime mentee of master potter Dr. Iskandar Jalil, she now continues to develop works of her own and has taken part in several group and solo shows. She has also worked with notable brands including Massimo Dutti, Aesop, Vogue Singapore, and Glenfiddich.

Fluent in Mandarin, Japanese, and Korean, Jean trained extensively in Japan and Korea under respected mentors including Kato Hiroshige, Takeuchi Shingo, and Hwang Insung. Her practice is rooted in traditional North Asian techniques yet continually pushes toward experimentation and new modes of expression. She has taught at NAFA across both Diploma and BA levels, designing structured syllabi that emphasise foundational technique, discipline, and the refinement of skill.
